Another Covid-19 wave beginning: Asad Umar warns

Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar warned on Sunday that clear evidence now suggests the beginning of another coronavirus wave, which was being expected from last few weeks.

Asad Umar, who also heads National Command and Operation Center (NCOC), said that genome sequencing shows rising proportion of omicron cases in country particularly in Karachi.

The minister stressed that wearing a mask is the best protection.

Pakistan has reported 8 deaths in the last 24 hours by novel coronavirus as the number of positive cases has surged to 1,296,527. The nationwide tally of fatalities has jumped to 28,941on Sunday.

According to the latest figures by the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) 594 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

Punjab remains the worst-hit province in terms of deaths followed by Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Till now 13,073 individuals have lost their lives to the epidemic in Punjab, 7,673 in Sindh 5,932 in KP, 967 in Islamabad, 746 in Azad Kashmir, 364 in Balochistan, and 186 in GB.
